Ucelený soubor odborných disciplín, který se v 17. -20. stol. postupně vyvinul v souvislosti s historickou kritikou. Stabilizoval se v tomto složení: paleografie, (historická) chronologie, genealogie, (historická) metrologie, diplomatika, kodikologie, sfragistika, heraldika, epigrafika, numismatika. Ve 20. stol. se projevuje tendence tento soubor rozšířit o některé další disciplíny, mj. historickou geografii, historickou demografii a někdy i textologii.
